Bible Verses for a New Baby (For Cards, Dedications, and Nursery Walls)

A new baby sends everyone to Scripture — for the card, for the dedication or christening, for the print above the cot. And Scripture rises to the occasion: the Bible is full of verses about children as gift, about God's early acquaintance with each of us, and blessings shaped exactly for small new people. Here are six, with a note on where each one fits best.
1. For the card
Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
The classic welcome verse: a child as heritage — something entrusted, precious, and sent. Three lines in a card with this verse and the baby's name needs nothing else.
2. For the wonder of them
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
Fearfully made means made with awe. Every parent counting fingers at 2 a.m. is having the Psalm 139 experience; this is the verse for the nursery wall.
3. For the dedication or christening
The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
The oldest blessing there is — three thousand years of children have been welcomed under these words. Read it aloud over the baby, hands on the small head, and let the room say amen.
4. For the welcome itself
Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
Jesus' standing welcome to small people — the door held permanently open. A lovely verse for a first Bible's flyleaf.
5. For the parents' prayer
And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.
The promise praying parents stand on for decades: taught of the LORD — by Him, personally, in years you won't witness. Write it in the front of the baby book and pray it on birthdays.
6. For the years ahead
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
The old apostle's confession, and every Christian parent's eventual one: no promotion, purchase, or milestone compares. It's the long game named in one line — a verse for the parents more than the card.
A blessing to borrow
If you're asked to "say a few words" at the dedication, borrow this: "Father, thank You for this child — fearfully and wonderfully made, and Yours before ours. Bless them and keep them; let them meet You early and walk with You long. And make us the kind of family where that's easy to learn. Amen." Then read the Numbers blessing, and you've done it beautifully. For the mornings after everyone goes home, our daily devotionals are read-aloud-sized — even over a Moses basket.
