The turn of a new year stirs something in us — reflection on what's passed, hope for what's ahead, and a longing for a fresh start. Whatever the last year held, Scripture offers a firm place to stand as you step into the new one. Here are verses to carry with you.
New mercies for the new year
It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
As you begin a new year, remember that God's mercies are new — not just every January, but every morning. Whatever regrets the old year holds, His compassion offers a genuinely fresh start. His faithfulness is the ground beneath the new year.
God is doing new things
Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth
A new year is a fitting time to remember that God is always at work bringing forth new things. Whatever's behind you, He can grow something fresh in the year ahead — new grace, new growth, new beginnings springing up.
A future in good hands
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
You can't see what the new year holds, but you can know the One who does. God's thoughts toward you are of peace, aimed at a good future. Step into the unknown year trusting that it's held in good and loving hands.
Press forward
forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before
A new year is a chance to release what's behind — old failures, regrets, and hurts — and reach forward. You can't move ahead while staring at the past. Face the new year forward, trusting God with what's ahead.
As you enter a new year, hold onto these truths: God's mercies are new, He's doing new things, your future is in good hands, and you can leave the past behind and press forward. Whatever the year holds, step into it anchored in God's faithfulness and good plans. He goes before you into every day of it.
