Christian Words and Their Meanings (A Beginner's Glossary)

4 June 2026 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

Step into church as a newcomer and you can feel like everyone's speaking a foreign language — grace, salvation, testimony, sanctification. Here's a friendly, plain-English glossary of common Christian words so you're not left guessing.

Gospel

Literally 'good news.' It refers to the message that Jesus lived, died, and rose again to rescue us and bring us to God. The first four books of the New Testament are also called the Gospels.

Grace

Undeserved favour — God's kindness given freely, not earned. It's the heart of Christianity: we receive what we couldn't earn, as a gift.

Salvation / being saved

Being rescued by God from sin and its consequences, and brought into relationship with Him. To be 'saved' is to have received that rescue through trusting Jesus.

Sin

More than just bad deeds — it's falling short of what we were made for, living for ourselves rather than God. It's the problem Jesus came to solve.

Faith

Trust in God — relying on Him and His promises, even what you can't see. Not blind belief, but confidence placed in a trustworthy God.

Repentance

A change of mind and direction — turning away from going your own way and turning toward God. Less about grovelling, more about coming home.

Testimony

Your personal story of what God has done in your life — how you came to faith and how He's changed you.

Sanctification

The lifelong process of becoming more like Jesus after you're saved. A big word for gradual growth.

Worship

Honouring God — not just singing, but a whole-life response of love and reverence to who He is.

Amen

A word meaning 'so be it' or 'truly,' said at the end of prayers to affirm agreement.

Don't worry about learning all the jargon at once — it comes naturally the more you're around it. And never be embarrassed to ask what a word means; most Christians are glad to explain, and you're certainly not the only one wondering.
