Crossing the Red Sea: When God Made a Way

5 August 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible · For Children

The parting of the Red Sea is one of the most spectacular miracles in the Bible — the moment God made a way of escape where there seemed to be none, delivering his people from Pharaoh's army through the middle of the sea. It's a story with a powerful lesson for anyone facing an impossible situation. Here's the account and its meaning.

Trapped with no way out

God had just freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, but Pharaoh changed his mind and chased after them with his army. The people found themselves trapped — the sea in front of them, Pharaoh's chariots closing in behind, and no way to escape. It looked hopeless, and the people were terrified, crying out in fear.

'The LORD shall fight for you'

Into their panic, Moses spoke words of remarkable calm and faith: 'Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD... The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.' Their job wasn't to fight or figure out an escape, but to trust God to act. Sometimes faith means standing still and watching God do what only he can do.

The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
Exodus 14:14, KJV

A path through the sea

Then God told Moses to stretch out his hand over the sea. A strong wind blew all night, and the waters parted, leaving a path of dry ground straight through the middle of the sea, with walls of water on either side. The Israelites walked through on dry land — a way of escape where moments before there had been none.

Deliverance and judgment

When the Egyptian army pursued them into the sea, God caused the waters to return, and Pharaoh's army was swept away. Israel was saved, standing safe on the far shore, watching the God who had delivered them. They broke into a song of praise. The impossible had happened; God had made a way.

What it teaches

The Red Sea reminds us that no situation is too hopeless for God. When we're trapped, with no way out that we can see, God is able to make a way. Our part is often simply to trust him and take the step forward. As the people learned, 'the LORD shall fight for you' — and the God who parted the sea is the same God we trust today.

Crossing the Red Sea is a triumphant reminder that God makes a way where there seems to be none. Trapped between the sea and the enemy, Israel watched God deliver them through the impossible. Whatever 'Red Sea' you're facing — a situation with no visible way out — the story invites you to trust the God who fights for his people, stand firm, and watch him make a way.
