The set-up

Daniel was a Hebrew exile who had risen to high office in the Persian empire through his integrity and wisdom. His success bred jealousy. His rivals, unable to find any fault in him, schemed to trap him through his faith: they persuaded the king to sign a law that for thirty days, anyone who prayed to any god or man except the king would be thrown to the lions.

Faithful anyway

Daniel knew about the law. And what did he do? Exactly what he had always done: 'he went into his house... and prayed, and gave thanks before his God... as he did aforetime.'
