Dealing With Guilt and Shame

Guilt and shame are heavy burdens — guilt over what we've done, shame over who we fear we are. Many people carry them for years. But the gospel offers real freedom. Here's how to deal with guilt and shame through Christ.
Guilt has a remedy: forgiveness
For genuine guilt, God offers genuine forgiveness: 'If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.' We don't have to carry our guilt; we can confess it and receive full cleansing. That's the good news.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
No more condemnation
For those in Christ, the verdict of guilty is gone: 'There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.' Once you're forgiven, the case is closed. The lingering sense of condemnation is not from God, who has declared you forgiven.
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Sin removed completely
God doesn't just forgive; he removes our sin entirely: 'As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.' East and west never meet — that's how completely God deals with what he forgives. You don't have to keep punishing yourself for what God has removed.
As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
Dealing with guilt and shame means confessing genuine guilt and receiving God's full forgiveness, resting in the truth that there's now no condemnation in Christ, and believing that God has removed your sin completely. You don't have to carry these burdens. Bring them to God, receive his cleansing, and walk in the freedom he offers. In Christ, you are forgiven, uncondemned, and free.
