Finding Joy in Difficult Seasons

15 May 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

Joy in the middle of a difficult season can sound impossible — even offensive. But the Bible speaks of a joy that doesn't depend on circumstances, one that can hold even in hard times. Here's how to find joy in difficult seasons.

Joy is deeper than happiness

The key is understanding that biblical joy isn't the same as happiness. Happiness depends on happenings; joy is rooted in God and his goodness, which don't change with our situation. That's why the Bible can speak of joy even in trials — it rests on something deeper than our circumstances.

Choosing joy anyway

The prophet Habakkuk models joy in the hardest of times. Even as everything failed around him, he declared: 'Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.' Joy, in part, is a choice — to fix our hearts on God's goodness even when life is hard.

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.
Habakkuk 3:17–18, KJV

Strength for the hard days

Joy isn't a luxury in difficult seasons; it's a source of strength. 'The joy of the LORD is your strength.' Cultivating joy in God — through gratitude and remembering his goodness — gives us resilience to keep going when circumstances are draining.

Finding joy in difficult seasons means understanding that joy is deeper than happiness, choosing to rejoice in God even when life is hard, and drawing strength from the joy of the Lord. It doesn't mean pretending things aren't difficult; it means holding on to a gladness rooted in God that no hard season can steal. Even in the valley, joy in the Lord is possible — and it will be your strength.
