Finding Joy in Motherhood (Beyond the Exhaustion)

24 November 2025 · 2 min read

Motherhood is one of life's great joys — and one of its most exhausting, relentless jobs. In the daily grind of feeds, tantrums, and never-ending laundry, the joy can get buried under the weariness. Here's how to find and hold onto it.

Joy and hardship coexist

First, release the guilt of not feeling joyful every moment. Motherhood can be hard and joyful at the same time — the exhaustion is real, and so is the love. You don't have to manufacture constant happiness; you just have to keep your eyes open to the joy woven through the hard days.

Notice the small moments

The joy of motherhood often hides in tiny moments — a sleepy cuddle, a first word, a belly laugh, a small hand in yours. In the rush, these can slip past unnoticed. Slowing down enough to really see and savour them is where much of the joy is found.

Remember the gift

On the hardest days, it helps to remember what your children are: a heritage and gift from God, entrusted to you. This exhausting season is precious and fleeting — the very things that drain you now will one day be the memories you treasure most.

Care for yourself too

Joy is hard to feel when you're running on empty. Caring for yourself — rest, support, moments of refilling — isn't selfish; it's what lets the joy resurface. A depleted mother struggles to feel joy she genuinely has.

Find joy in God, not perfect circumstances

Ultimately, lasting joy isn't rooted in easy days but in God. 'In thy presence is fulness of joy.' A mother anchored in Him can find joy even in the chaos, because its source isn't her circumstances but her relationship with God.

Finding joy in motherhood isn't about pretending it's easy — it's about noticing the small gifts, remembering the treasure your children are, caring for yourself, and rooting your joy in God. The joy is there, even on the hard days. Look for it, and let it carry you.
