Finding Peace in a Chaotic World

Between the news, the pace of life, and our own inner anxieties, the world can feel relentlessly chaotic. Yet God offers a peace that doesn't depend on the chaos settling down. Here's how to find peace in a chaotic world.
A peace beyond understanding
God's peace isn't the absence of trouble but a calm within it: 'the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.' It's a peace that doesn't add up by human logic — a settledness that outstrips our circumstances.
Fix your mind on God
The secret to peace is where we fix our attention: 'Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee.' When our minds fixate on the chaos, anxiety grows; when they return, again and again, to God, peace grows. Peace follows a mind stayed on him.
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
Be still
Amid upheaval, God's word to us is, 'Be still, and know that I am God.' The stillness isn't passivity but the deliberate laying down of our frantic efforts to control what only God can hold. Remembering who actually runs the world quiets the anxious heart.
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
Finding peace in a chaotic world means receiving a peace beyond understanding, fixing our minds on God rather than the chaos, and being still enough to remember that he is God. The world may not calm down, but our hearts can. Turn your attention to God, hand him what you can't control, and let his peace — which the world can't give and chaos can't steal — guard your heart.
