Finding Peace in God's Presence (The Rest Your Soul Craves)

18 November 2025 · 2 min read

We chase peace everywhere — in achievement, distraction, control, the hope that things will finally settle down. Yet it stays elusive, because we're often looking in the wrong places. The deep peace our souls crave is found in God's presence. Here's how to find it there.

Peace is a Person, not a circumstance

We imagine peace will come when our circumstances are finally sorted — but that day never quite arrives. Real, lasting peace isn't the absence of problems; it's the presence of God. Jesus said, 'my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth.' It's rooted in Him, not in everything going right.

Draw near to God

Peace grows as you draw near to God — through prayer, His Word, worship, and simply being with Him. 'In thy presence is fulness of joy.' The more you cultivate awareness of God's nearness, the more His peace settles into you. Time in His presence is time being filled with His peace.

Be still

Finding peace requires slowing down enough to be with God. 'Be still, and know that I am God.' In our rush, we miss the quiet where peace is found. Building in stillness — even a few minutes to breathe, pray, and rest in God — opens the door to His peace.

Hand over your worries

Peace and anxiety can't share the same space. As you hand your worries to God in prayer — 'casting all your care upon him' — His peace fills the space they leave. This is an ongoing exchange: release the burden, receive the peace, again and again.

Fix your mind on Him

'Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee.' Where your mind rests determines much of your peace. Turning your thoughts toward God — His character, promises, and presence — rather than dwelling on problems, is how His peace takes hold.

The peace your soul craves isn't found in fixing your circumstances but in drawing near to God. Cultivate His presence, be still, hand over your worries, and fix your mind on Him. His peace — deeper than the world's and independent of your circumstances — is available whenever you turn to Him. Come near, and find the rest you've been longing for.
