Finding Rest When You're Exhausted

22 May 2025 · 1 min read · Understanding the Bible

Exhaustion is one of the defining features of modern life — worn out in body, and often even more so in soul. Into that weariness, Jesus offers a remarkable invitation: rest. Here's how to find rest when you're exhausted.

Come to Jesus

Jesus' invitation is direct and tender: 'Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.' The first step to real rest isn't a technique but a Person. He invites the weary and burdened to come to him and find rest for their souls.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28, KJV

Rest for the soul, not just the body

The deepest rest we need isn't only physical. It's the rest of a soul that has stopped striving to prove itself and earn its place. Jesus offers rest from the exhausting work of trying to be good enough, to carry what was never ours to carry. That soul-rest is available every day.

Stop and trust

Much exhaustion comes from believing everything depends on us. Rest is, in part, an act of trust — laying down our frantic striving to remember that God holds the world, and us. Building in regular rhythms of stopping, and handing our burdens to God, restores us in ways constant doing never can.

Finding rest when you're exhausted begins with coming to Jesus, receiving rest for your soul as well as your body, and learning to stop and trust rather than endlessly strive. In a culture of relentless doing, this is a gift: you don't have to carry it all. Come to Jesus with your weariness, hand him your burdens, and find the rest he promises to all who come.
