How to Be a Man of God (Character That Counts)

'Man of God' is a phrase thrown around in Christian circles, but what does it actually mean in practice? It's not about being loud, impressive, or perfectly religious. It's about a particular kind of character, grown over time. Here's what it looks like.
A man who fears God
At the foundation, a man of God takes God seriously — he reveres Him, seeks Him, and orders his life around Him rather than around his own comfort or the world's approval. This 'fear of the Lord' isn't terror; it's a deep respect that shapes everything else. It's the root from which godly character grows.
A man of integrity
A man of God is the same person in private as in public — honest, trustworthy, and consistent when no one's watching. Integrity is the backbone of godly manhood. 'The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.' Who you are in the dark is who you really are.
A man of the Word and prayer
You can't be a man of God while ignoring God. A godly man stays connected — spending time in Scripture and prayer, however simply. This is where character is fed and strength is drawn. Neglect it, and godliness withers; tend it, and it grows.
A man who serves
Godly manhood, modelled on Jesus, leads by serving. A man of God uses his strength to bless and lift others — his family, his church, those in need — rather than for self. 'The Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister.' Service, not status, marks the godly man.
A man who keeps getting up
A man of God isn't sinless — he fails like everyone. What sets him apart is that he keeps turning back to God, owning his failures, and getting up again by grace. Godliness is a direction, not a state of perfection. He's a work in progress who won't quit.
Being a man of God isn't about impressive spirituality — it's about fearing God, walking in integrity, staying connected to Him, serving others, and getting up again when you fall. Pursue that character, day by day, and you'll become the kind of man God delights to use and others deeply respect.
