How to Be Generous (The Joy of Giving)
7 March 2026 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible
Generosity runs right through the Bible, reflecting the very heart of a God who gives. Yet in a world that pushes us to accumulate and hold on, giving freely can feel counterintuitive. Here's why God calls us to generosity, and how to grow a generous heart that actually finds joy in it.
God is a generous giver
Generosity begins with God's own character. He is the ultimate giver — of life, of every good gift, and supremely of his Son. 'For God so loved the world, that he gave.' When we give generously, we're reflecting the nature of the God who gave everything for us. Christian generosity isn't earning God's favour; it's imitating a Father who loves to give.
God loves a cheerful giver
The Bible cares not just that we give, but how. 'Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.' Generosity isn't about grudging obligation or guilt; it's meant to be joyful. God delights not in reluctant giving but in a glad, willing heart. The attitude matters as much as the amount.
Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
The paradox of giving
Jesus taught a beautiful paradox: giving actually enriches the giver. 'Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over.' This isn't a formula for getting rich, but a spiritual truth — that generosity opens our hands and hearts, loosens the grip of greed, and brings a joy and blessing that holding on never can. We're never poorer for giving.
Generosity is more than money
While giving money is part of it, generosity extends much further — to our time, our attention, our hospitality, our encouragement, and our care for those in need. A generous life is one marked by open hands and an open heart in every area, always looking for ways to bless others. Some of the most generous people give little money but much of themselves.
Growing a generous heart
Generosity grows with practice and with gratitude. Start where you are, give intentionally and cheerfully, and watch how it changes you. Remembering how generously God has treated us fuels our giving to others. Over time, giving becomes less a duty and more a delight — and we discover the truth Jesus spoke of, that 'it is more blessed to give than to receive.'
Generosity flows from the heart of a giving God, and he calls us to give cheerfully, not grudgingly. Far from leaving us poorer, open-handed giving enriches the giver, loosens the grip of greed, and brings real joy. Generosity reaches beyond money to our time, care, and whole selves. Grow it with practice and gratitude, and you'll discover what Scripture promises: that there is deep and lasting blessing in giving.
