How to Find Rest for Your Soul (Beyond Physical Rest)

15 September 2025 · 2 min read · Comfort & Grief

Sometimes we're tired in a way that a good night's sleep can't fix — a weariness in the soul. Life's burdens, stress, and striving leave us worn out on the inside. Jesus offers a deeper kind of rest for exactly this. Here's how to find rest for your soul.

A different kind of tired

Soul-weariness is different from physical tiredness. It's the exhaustion of carrying burdens, striving to keep everything together, and running on empty inside. You can be well-rested physically and still feel bone-tired in your soul. Recognising this deeper tiredness is the first step to finding the rest that meets it.

Jesus' invitation

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28, KJV

Jesus' invitation is aimed straight at the soul-weary — the labouring and heavy laden. He promises rest, and He continues: 'ye shall find rest unto your souls.' This is rest for the inside, offered freely to those who come to Him.

Lay down the burdens

Much soul-tiredness comes from carrying what we were never meant to carry alone — worries, control, the weight of everything depending on us. Finding rest means handing these to God. 'Casting all your care upon him.' The soul finds rest when it stops carrying what God is willing to hold.

Stop striving

Soul-rest also comes from stopping the endless striving to prove, earn, and achieve. In Christ, you're already accepted and loved — you don't have to strive for it. 'Be still, and know that I am God.' Resting in His grace, rather than performing for approval, brings deep relief to a weary soul.

Return to Him regularly

Soul-rest isn't a one-time fix but a rhythm of returning to God — in daily quiet, in prayer, in Sabbath rest. Regularly coming back to Him refills what life depletes. The more you make returning to God a habit, the more your soul stays rested.

Rest for your soul is found not in more sleep but in coming to Jesus — laying down your burdens, stopping the striving, and returning to Him regularly. He offers a deep, inner rest the world can't give, to all who are weary and heavy laden. If your soul is tired, come to Him. The rest you need is found in His presence.
