How to Grow Closer to God (Deepening Your Relationship)
19 January 2026 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible
If Christianity is a relationship with God, then like any relationship, it grows deeper with time and attention — or drifts with neglect. Many believers long to feel closer to God but aren't sure how. Here are the timeless ways that relationship deepens.
Spend time in His Word
You grow close to someone partly by learning who they are — and God has revealed Himself in the Bible. Regular time in Scripture, even a little daily, is how you get to know His character, His heart, and His ways. It's His primary way of speaking to you. A relationship with someone you never listen to stays shallow.
Talk to Him in prayer
Relationships grow through conversation. Prayer is simply talking with God — thanking, asking, confessing, and listening. It doesn't need to be formal or eloquent; it needs to be honest and regular. A running conversation with God through your day keeps the relationship alive and close.
Obey what you know
Closeness with God grows through trust and obedience. As you actually do what He says — loving others, forgiving, walking in integrity — you experience His faithfulness and your relationship deepens. Jesus connected love and obedience: those who keep His words are the ones who know His presence.
Worship and give thanks
Worship — adoring God for who He is — and gratitude draw your heart toward Him. Whether through singing, quiet praise, or simply thanking Him through the day, turning your attention to God's goodness deepens intimacy and keeps Him at the centre.
Stay connected to other believers
You grow closer to God partly through His people. Christian community encourages your faith, teaches you, and often becomes a place where you encounter God. Isolation stunts spiritual growth; community fuels it.
Keep going through dry spells
Sometimes God will feel distant — that's normal, not failure. The key is to keep showing up: keep reading, praying, and obeying even when feelings fade. Closeness isn't measured by constant emotion but by a faithful, ongoing walk. The dry spells pass, and depth grows through them.
Growing closer to God isn't complicated, but it does take intention: time in His Word, honest prayer, obedience, worship, community, and faithfulness through the dry seasons. Give the relationship attention, and it will deepen — because God draws near to those who draw near to Him.
