How to Hear God's Voice (Learning to Recognise His Leading)

13 October 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

Many Christians long to 'hear God's voice' but feel unsure how — or whether they're just imagining things. Does God still speak, and how do we recognise His leading? Here's a grounded, practical look at hearing God.

God does speak

The reassuring starting point: God is a communicating God who desires relationship with you. Jesus said, 'My sheep hear my voice.' As you walk with Him, you can genuinely learn to recognise His leading. Hearing God isn't reserved for spiritual elites; it's part of a living relationship with Him.

Primarily through His Word

The main way God speaks is through the Bible — His inspired, reliable Word. When you read Scripture, you're hearing God directly. This is the surest place to hear Him, and it's the standard against which every other sense of His leading is tested. Any 'word' that contradicts Scripture isn't from God.

Through prayer and quiet

God often speaks in the quiet — a gentle impression, a sense of peace or unease, a thought that aligns with His character and Word. 'Thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it.' Learning to hear this quiet leading takes stillness, attentiveness, and practice over time.

Through other means

God also guides through wise counsel from godly people, through circumstances (open and closed doors), and through the inner peace (or lack of it) that accompanies a decision. When these line up with Scripture, you can move forward with growing confidence that you're hearing Him.

Learning to discern

Recognising God's voice is a skill that grows with relationship. As you spend time in His Word and prayer, you become more familiar with His character and 'accent,' making it easier to distinguish His leading from your own desires or fears. Like any relationship, you learn to know His voice by spending time with Him.

Hearing God's voice is real and available — primarily through His Word, and also through prayer, quiet, wise counsel, circumstances, and peace, always tested against Scripture. It's a skill that grows as you walk closely with Him. Spend time in His Word and presence, stay attentive, and over time you'll increasingly recognise the voice of the God who loves to lead His people.
