How to Keep Going When You Want to Quit (Endurance for the Weary)

12 February 2026 · 2 min read · Comfort & Grief

Everyone reaches it eventually — the point where you're worn down, discouraged, and ready to quit. A dream, a commitment, a hard road, or just life itself feels like too much. If you're there now, this is for you: real encouragement to keep going when quitting feels tempting.

Wanting to quit doesn't mean you should

First, know that the feeling of wanting to give up is normal and doesn't necessarily mean giving up is right. Weariness clouds judgment; the low point often feels more final than it is. Many of the best things in life came from people who pressed on past the point they wanted to quit. Don't make permanent decisions from a temporary low.

You may be closer than you feel

'Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.' Often the temptation to quit is strongest right before a breakthrough. The harvest comes to those who don't give up. You may be nearer the turning point than your discouragement lets you believe.

Take the next small step

When the whole road feels overwhelming, don't focus on the whole road — just take the next step. Get through today. Then tomorrow. Endurance is built one small step at a time, not by summoning strength for the entire journey at once. Keep going, in small, manageable pieces.

Lean on God's strength

You don't have to keep going on your own steam. 'Though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.' God renews strength for the weary from the inside. When your own resources are gone, His are not. Ask Him for the strength to take the next step.

Fix your eyes on why

Reconnecting with your reason — why this matters, what it's for — can reignite the will to continue. Hebrews points us to 'look unto Jesus,' who endured for the joy set before Him. Keeping the purpose and the goal in view puts strength back in weary legs.

Don't do it alone

Sharing your discouragement with others lightens it and often brings the encouragement and support you need to press on. Isolation makes quitting more likely; community helps you keep going. Let others carry you when you're weak.

When you want to quit, don't make it final from the low point. You may be closer than you feel. Take the next small step, lean on God's renewing strength, remember your why, and let others encourage you. Keep going — endurance has its harvest, and the God who strengthens the weary is with you.
