How to Make Godly Decisions (Finding Wisdom for Choices)

28 March 2026 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

We all face decisions — some small, some life-shaping — and Christians often feel real anxiety about making the 'right' one, the one God wants. The good news is that making godly decisions is less mysterious and stressful than we fear. Here's a practical, freeing guide.

Start with what God has already said

Before agonising over the unknown, remember that God has already made much of his will clear in the Bible. Any option that requires disobeying him is off the table. So first, ask whether your choices line up with God's revealed truth and character. A surprising amount of 'guidance' is simply obeying what God has already told us.

Ask God for wisdom

The Bible gives a wonderful promise for decision-making: 'If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.' God isn't stingy with wisdom. Genuinely ask him for it, trusting that he wants to help you choose well and will give what you need.

James 1:5, KJV

Trust him to direct your steps

'Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.' You don't have to see the whole road ahead. As you trust God and involve him in your decisions, he promises to guide your steps — often more clearly in hindsight than in advance. Do your part faithfully, and trust him to steer.

Use the means God gives

God usually guides through several things working together: Scripture, prayer, wise and godly counsel from people who know you, your circumstances (open and closed doors), and the peace or unease you sense as you weigh the options. When these line up, you can move forward with confidence. Seeking counsel especially guards us from our own blind spots.

Decide, and don't be paralysed

For many choices, there isn't one hidden 'right' answer you'll miss and ruin your life. Within God's revealed will, he often gives freedom and wisdom to choose. So seek him, weigh it wisely, and then decide — trusting that a surrendered heart, sincerely seeking God, won't be led astray. Fear of getting it 'wrong' shouldn't leave you frozen.

Making godly decisions means starting with what God has already revealed, asking him for wisdom, trusting him to direct your steps, using the means he provides — Scripture, prayer, counsel, circumstances, peace — and then deciding without being paralysed by fear. God isn't hiding his will from a heart that genuinely seeks it. Draw near to him, do the next wise thing, and trust him to lead you where you need to go.
