How to Serve God (Living a Life That Counts)

5 March 2026 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

Every follower of Jesus is called not just to believe, but to serve — to live a life that counts for God. But what does serving God actually look like, and how do we do it? The good news is that it's more accessible than you might think. Here's a practical guide to serving God with your life.

Follow Jesus' example

Jesus defined greatness in his kingdom by service, and he modelled it perfectly. 'The Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.' To serve God is to follow the example of Jesus, who washed feet and gave himself for others. Serving God and serving people are deeply connected.

For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Mark 10:45, KJV

Serve God by loving people

Much of serving God happens through serving others. 'By love serve one another,' the Bible says. When we care for the needy, encourage the discouraged, help the struggling, and love those around us, we're serving God himself — Jesus said that what we do for 'the least of these' we do for him. Ordinary acts of love are sacred service.

Use the gifts you've been given

God has given every believer gifts, abilities, and opportunities to serve — and no two people serve identically. Some teach, some encourage, some show hospitality, some give, some work behind the scenes. Serving God means discovering how he's wired you and using it for his purposes and others' good. You don't need someone else's gifts; you need to use yours.

Serve where you already are

You don't have to go somewhere special to serve God. Your home, your workplace, your neighbourhood, your church — these are your mission field. Serving God is often less about grand gestures and more about faithfulness right where you are: doing your work with integrity, loving your family, helping a neighbour, being a light in your ordinary corner of the world.

Serve from love, not duty

Crucially, we serve God out of gratitude for what he's done, not to earn his approval — which we already have in Christ. Service flows from love, not fear or obligation. When we remember how much God has loved and given to us, serving him becomes a joyful response rather than a heavy duty. The order matters: loved first, then serving.

Serving God means following Jesus' example of self-giving love — loving and serving the people around you, using the gifts God has given you, and being faithful right where you are, all out of gratitude for his grace. You don't need a title, a stage, or a special calling to live a life that counts. Whoever and wherever you are, you can serve God today, and, like Joshua, declare, 'as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.'
