How to Start Reading the Bible as a Man (A Practical Starting Point)

26 May 2026 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

Plenty of Christian men own a Bible and feel vaguely guilty that they rarely open it. It looks long, parts of it are confusing, and it's hard to know where to start. If that's you, here's a straightforward plan to actually get going.

Don't start at page one

Beginning at Genesis and reading straight through is how most men stall out — usually somewhere in the laws of Leviticus. The Bible isn't designed to be read cover to cover like a novel. Start somewhere that connects fast.

Start with a Gospel

The best place to begin is one of the Gospels — Mark is short and fast-moving, John is reflective and rich. These tell the story of Jesus directly, and everything else in the Bible orbits Him. Get to know Jesus first, and the rest makes more sense.

Add Proverbs and Psalms

Alongside a Gospel, try a chapter of Proverbs (there are 31 — one a day for a month) for practical wisdom, and dip into the Psalms for raw, honest prayers that cover every emotion a man feels. Both are accessible and immediately useful.

Keep it short and regular

You don't need to read chapters at a time. A few verses daily, understood and thought about, beats a big burst you can't sustain. Consistency is the whole game. Pick a time — coffee, commute, before bed — and keep it small enough to actually do.

Read to meet God, not tick a box

Don't just aim to get through it; aim to hear from God. As you read, ask two questions: what does this show me about God, and what does it mean for how I live? A short passage engaged like that does more than a chapter skimmed.

So grab a readable translation, start with Mark, add a Proverb a day, keep it short, and just begin. The Bible has changed more men's lives than any other book — but only the ones who actually open it.
