Isaiah 40: Comfort for the Weary
1 December 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible
Isaiah 40 is one of the most uplifting chapters in the Bible — a soaring passage that moves from tender comfort to the greatness of God to the promise of renewed strength for the weary. Here's a devotional walk through it.
'Comfort ye my people'
The chapter opens with God's tender words: 'Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.' After chapters of warning, God turns to console his people. It's a reminder that God is not only just but deeply compassionate — a God who speaks comfort to the hurting and the discouraged. His heart toward his weary people is tenderness.
The enduring word of God
Isaiah reminds us that while everything else fades — 'the grass withereth, the flower fadeth' — 'the word of our God shall stand for ever.' In a world of constant change and disappointment, God's promises remain unshakeable. What he has said, he will do. His word is the one solid, permanent thing we can build our lives on.
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
The greatness of God
The middle of the chapter lifts our eyes to the sheer greatness of God — who measures the oceans in the hollow of his hand, weighs the mountains, and calls the stars by name. Set beside such a God, our problems shrink to their proper size. This is not a distant, abstract greatness, but the greatness of the God who cares for us personally.
Renewed strength
The chapter's famous climax is a promise for the exhausted: 'they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.' To the weary, God offers not a demand to try harder but the promise of renewed strength found in waiting on him.
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 40 carries the weary from comfort, to the unshakeable word of God, to the greatness of the One who holds the stars, and finally to the promise of renewed strength for all who wait on him. When you're tired and discouraged, let this chapter lift your eyes. The God who comforts his people is greater than every problem, faithful to every promise, and able to renew the strength of those who lean on him.
