Jesus the Good Shepherd: What It Means
23 September 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible
Of all the images Jesus used for himself, few are as beloved as the Good Shepherd. It's a picture full of tenderness, protection, and sacrificial love — and it speaks deeply to our need to be led and cared for. Here's what it means that Jesus is the Good Shepherd.
'I am the good shepherd'
In John's Gospel, Jesus declared, 'I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.' In a rural culture, everyone knew what a shepherd did — leading the flock to food and water, guarding them from predators, searching for the lost, and caring for the weak. Jesus takes up that whole image and applies it to himself and to us, his sheep.
I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
He knows his sheep
A striking part of Jesus' teaching is that the Good Shepherd knows his sheep personally, and they know his voice. 'I know my sheep, and am known of mine.' This isn't distant, generic care; it's personal knowledge and relationship. Jesus knows you by name, knows your needs, and you can learn to recognise and follow his voice.
He lays down his life
What makes Jesus the good shepherd — not just any shepherd — is that he lays down his life for the sheep. A hired hand runs when the wolf comes; the good shepherd dies to protect his flock. This points straight to the cross, where Jesus gave his life to save us. His care isn't just guidance; it's sacrifice. He loved us enough to die.
He seeks the lost
The Good Shepherd also goes after the one that wanders, as Jesus taught in the parable of the lost sheep. He doesn't wait for the straying to find their own way back; he searches until he finds them, and carries them home rejoicing. However lost you feel, the Good Shepherd is the kind who comes looking.
Following the Shepherd
To have Jesus as our shepherd is to be led, provided for, protected, and known. It's the comfort at the heart of the most beloved psalm — 'The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want' — now fulfilled in Christ. Our part is simply to follow: to listen for his voice, trust his leading, and stay near the Shepherd who gave everything for us.
Jesus the Good Shepherd is one of the most comforting pictures of Christ in all the Bible: he knows his sheep by name, leads and provides for them, seeks the lost, and lays down his life to save them. To be one of his sheep is to be deeply known and endlessly cared for. Whatever you face, the Good Shepherd is with you — and you can trust the One who gave his life for you to lead you home.
