Perseverance in the Christian Life

25 February 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

The Christian life is often compared to a race — and not a short sprint, but a long-distance marathon requiring endurance. Perseverance, keeping going over the long haul, is essential. Here's how to persevere in the Christian life.

Run with patience

The Bible pictures faith as a race to be run with endurance: 'let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.' We keep going not by staring at the difficulties, but by fixing our eyes on Jesus, who both begins and completes our faith.

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Hebrews 12:1, KJV

Don't grow weary

Perseverance means not giving up when it's hard: 'let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.' Many give up just before the harvest. The call is to keep going, trusting that faithful endurance is never wasted.

Strength for the long haul

We don't persevere by our own willpower, but by God's strength — staying close to him through his word, prayer, and community. As we lean on him, he sustains us through discouragement, temptation, and dry seasons. He is faithful to carry us to the finish.

Perseverance in the Christian life means running the race with patience, our eyes fixed on Jesus, not growing weary in doing good, and drawing strength from God for the long haul. It's a marathon, not a sprint — but we don't run it alone or in our own strength. Keep going, keep looking to Jesus, and trust the God who began a good work in you to carry it through to completion.
