A Prayer for My Children (For Mums to Pray, Morning or Midnight)

Every praying mother knows the wordless kind of prayer — the one that's mostly a held breath over a sleeping child, or a name said toward heaven in the school car park. Those count entirely. But sometimes it helps to have fuller words ready. Here is a mother's prayer to borrow and bend, shorter ones for particular seasons, and the verse to stand on when the praying feels like shouting into wind.

A mother's prayer

"Father, these children were Yours before they were mine — I'm only the one You lent them to. So I bring them back to You this morning, by name. Keep them safe today where I can't see them. Put good people in their path and give them the sense to know the difference. Guard their hearts from what I can't filter and their minds from what I can't answer yet. More than success, give them You. Let them meet You young and never quite get over it. Make our home a place where Your kindness is ordinary — and when I fail at that, which will be today at some point, cover the gap with grace. And Lord — help me trust You with them. The carrying was always Yours. Amen."

For the seasons

For little ones: "Father, bless this small person — growing bones, growing heart. Keep them safe, keep them kind, and let them always know the way home. Amen."

For school years: "Lord, be in the classroom and the playground today. Give them one good friend, courage for the hard bits, and a heart that stays soft. Amen."

For teenagers: "Father, I can't walk beside them like I used to — but You can. Stay close when they push far. Guard what's forming in them, and keep the door between us open. Amen."

For grown children: "Lord, my praying is most of my parenting now. Draw them, keep them, bless the road they're on — and if they've wandered from You, be patient and relentless both. Amen."

The promise to stand on

Taught of the LORD — by Him, personally, in ways and years you won't witness. A praying mother is never the only one working on her children; she's the junior partner in the arrangement. And alongside it, the old training promise:

Proverbs deals in long harvests — there may be middle seasons when nothing looks trained at all. Keep sowing; the promise looks far down the road on purpose.

A rhythm that holds

The mothers who pray for their children for decades all do the same thing: they attach it to something daily. A name per morning with the kettle. The blessing at bedtime.
