Psalm 121: Where Does My Help Come From?

3 December 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

Psalm 121 is a short, beautiful psalm that has comforted travellers, the anxious, and the weary for centuries. In just a few verses, it lifts our eyes from our troubles to the God who watches over us. Here's a devotional walk through it.

Lifting our eyes

The psalm begins, 'I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.' The first movement of faith is to look up — away from our problems and toward God. When we're overwhelmed, our eyes tend to fix on the trouble in front of us; the psalm gently redirects our gaze upward, to the source of real help.

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1–2, KJV

Help from the Maker

The psalmist answers his own question: 'My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.' Our help doesn't come from the hills themselves, or from our own strength, or from the world's resources, but from the God who made everything. The One powerful enough to create the universe is the One who helps us. No problem is too big for the Maker of heaven and earth.

The God who never sleeps

The psalm assures us that God 'that keepeth thee will not slumber... he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.' Unlike us, God never dozes off, never stops watching, never takes a break from caring for us. Through the long night, through every hour we can't stay awake, he is watching. We can rest because he never does.

Kept in every way

The psalm piles up promises of protection: the LORD is our keeper, our shade, preserving us from evil, watching over our very souls. 'The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.' His care is total and personal — over our bodies, our spirits, our lives.

Coming and going, now and forever

It ends with a sweeping promise: 'The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.' God's watchful care covers all of life — every departure and return, every ordinary day — and it never ends. From now into eternity, we are kept by God.

Psalm 121 invites us to lift our eyes from our troubles to the God who made heaven and earth, who never sleeps, and who keeps us in every way, now and forever. When you feel overwhelmed or alone, let this psalm turn your gaze upward. Your help comes from the Lord — the tireless, watchful Keeper of your life, who will preserve your going out and coming in for evermore.
