Psalm 27: The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation

Whom shall I fear?

The psalm opens with a triumphant declaration: 'The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?' When God is our light, our salvation, and our strength, fear loses its grip. The question is rhetorical — with God on our side, there is no one and nothing we ultimately need to fear.

One thing I desire

At the heart of the psalm is David's deepest longing: 'One thing have I desired of the LORD... that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD.' Above safety or success, David most wanted God's presence. It's a searching question for us: is being near God our one great desire, or one item among many?
