Psalm 27: The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation

Psalm 27 is a beautiful psalm of confidence in God that also makes room for honesty and longing. It moves from bold assurance to heartfelt seeking to patient waiting, and it has strengthened fearful hearts for generations. Here's a devotional walk through it.
Whom shall I fear?
The psalm opens with a triumphant declaration: 'The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?' When God is our light, our salvation, and our strength, fear loses its grip. The question is rhetorical — with God on our side, there is no one and nothing we ultimately need to fear.
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
One thing I desire
At the heart of the psalm is David's deepest longing: 'One thing have I desired of the LORD... that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD.' Above safety or success, David most wanted God's presence. It's a searching question for us: is being near God our one great desire, or one item among many?
Honest about trouble
The psalm isn't naive. David acknowledges real enemies and real fear; he pleads with God not to hide his face or forsake him. Confidence and honesty sit side by side. Faith doesn't mean pretending everything is fine; it means bringing our real fears to God while still trusting him. Psalm 27 gives us permission to do both.
Wait on the Lord
The psalm ends with a word to the discouraged heart: 'Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.' When answers are slow and fears remain, we're called to wait — not passively, but with courage and hope, trusting God's timing. Waiting is where our hearts are strengthened.
Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
Psalm 27 takes us from bold confidence — 'the LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?' — through honest longing for God's presence, to patient, courageous waiting. It teaches us to face fear with faith, to desire God above all, and to wait on him when we must. Whatever you're afraid of today, let this psalm steady you: with the Lord as your light, you need not be afraid.
