Psalm 46: God Is Our Refuge and Strength

29 November 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

Psalm 46 is a mighty declaration of confidence in God amid chaos and upheaval — the psalm that inspired the great hymn 'A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.' It steadies the heart when the world feels like it's shaking. Here's a devotional walk through it.

A very present help

The psalm opens with a bold declaration: 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.' God isn't a distant last resort but a 'very present' help — near and available right in the middle of our troubles. He is both our refuge (a place of safety) and our strength (power to endure). When trouble comes, he is already there.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:1, KJV

Though the earth be shaken

The psalmist pictures the worst imaginable upheaval — mountains crumbling into the sea, waters roaring — and yet declares, 'therefore will not we fear.' Even if everything solid gives way, those who trust God have a security deeper than their circumstances. Our stability rests not on unchanging circumstances but on an unchanging God.

A river of peace

In contrast to the raging seas, the psalm speaks of a gentle river whose streams gladden the city of God. Amid the chaos of the world, there is a quiet current of God's presence and peace running through the lives of his people. God himself is in our midst, and 'she shall not be moved.' His presence brings calm in the storm.

'Be still, and know'

The psalm's most famous line is God's own command: 'Be still, and know that I am God.' In the midst of upheaval, we're called to stop striving, stop panicking, and rest in the knowledge that God is God and we are not. The stillness isn't passivity; it's the deliberate laying down of our anxious efforts to control what only God can hold.

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
Psalm 46:10, KJV

The Lord of hosts is with us

The psalm returns twice to its anchoring refrain: 'The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.' Everything rests on this — God is with us. His presence is our peace, our safety, and our confidence, whatever storms may come.

Psalm 46 is a rock to stand on when the world is shaking: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help, with us in the midst of every upheaval. Its call to 'be still, and know that I am God' invites us to stop striving and rest in his presence. Whatever is crumbling around you, the Lord of hosts is with you — and that is enough.
