The Calling of the Disciples: 'Follow Me'
12 June 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible
The calling of the first disciples is a deceptively simple story with world-changing consequences. With two words — 'Follow me' — Jesus called ordinary working men away from their nets and into a life that would change history. Here's the account and its meaning.
Ordinary men at work
Jesus began by the Sea of Galilee, where he found ordinary fishermen — Peter, Andrew, James, and John — at their everyday work, casting and mending nets. They weren't scholars, priests, or the religious elite. They were common labourers going about their business. And these were the people Jesus chose to build his movement.
'Follow me'
Jesus' call was simple and direct: 'Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.' He didn't offer a detailed plan or ask them to prove themselves first. He simply called, and promised to make them into something new. The invitation was personal and transformative — come with me, and I will change what your life is about.
And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
Immediate response
The response is striking: 'they straightway left their nets, and followed him.' They dropped everything and went. Their willingness to leave their livelihood at Jesus' call shows the compelling authority of his invitation — and a readiness to follow that is itself a model of discipleship. When Jesus calls, the right response is to come.
He uses the ordinary
The calling of these unremarkable men reveals a wonderful truth: Jesus builds his kingdom through ordinary people. He didn't choose the powerful or the impressive, but common folk whom he would shape into world-changers. It's an encouragement to all of us — you don't need to be extraordinary for Jesus to call and use you. He specialises in transforming ordinary lives.
He calls us still
The call of 'Follow me' wasn't only for those first disciples. Jesus still calls people today — to leave behind whatever competes with him and follow. And his promise still stands: he will make us into something we could never become on our own. Discipleship begins where it always has, with a simple, life-changing invitation, and our response.
The calling of the disciples shows Jesus taking ordinary people, calling them with a simple 'Follow me,' and promising to transform them into something new. Their immediate, wholehearted response models the discipleship he still invites us into. Whoever and wherever you are, Jesus calls you the same way — to leave behind what holds you and follow him, trusting that he will make you into more than you could be alone.
