The Creation Story: How the Bible Says It All Began

The Bible opens with one of the most majestic passages ever written: the account of God creating the heavens and the earth. Far more than a simple origin story, the creation account in Genesis is packed with profound truths about God, the world, and us. Here's the story and what it means.
'In the beginning God'
The Bible's very first words set the stage for everything: 'In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.' Before anything else existed, God was there. The universe is not an accident but the work of a Creator. Everything that follows — all of nature, all of history, all of us — begins with God, who simply is, and who spoke it all into being.
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
God speaks, and it is
Over six days, God creates by his word — 'And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.' Light and dark, sky and sea, land and plants, sun and stars, birds and fish, animals and finally people. The repeated refrain is that God simply speaks, and it comes to be. His word has power to call worlds into existence — a truth that echoes through the whole Bible.
'It was very good'
At each stage, God saw that what he made was good, and when it was all complete, 'God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.' The world was made good — beautiful, ordered, and full of life, a gift from a generous Creator. Whatever brokenness we see now came later; the world as God made it was very good.
And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
People, made in God's image
The crown of creation was humanity, made uniquely 'in the image of God.' Unlike anything else, people were made to know God, reflect him, care for his world, and enjoy relationship with him. This gives every human being immense dignity and worth. We are not cosmic accidents but image-bearers, made on purpose and loved.
God rested
On the seventh day, God rested — not from tiredness, but to establish a rhythm and to enjoy what he had made. This 'Sabbath' rest is woven into creation itself, a gift and a pattern for human life: to work, and then to stop and delight in God and his good world.
The creation story tells us that the universe is the good work of a good God, spoken into being by his powerful word, with humanity as its crown, made in his image and loved. It's the foundation of everything the Bible teaches: that we live in God's world, made by him and for him. However it stirs our wonder or our questions, its opening truth stands firm and beautiful — in the beginning, God.
