The Crucifixion of Jesus: The Heart of the Gospel

The crucifixion of Jesus stands at the very centre of the Christian faith. What looked like a tragic execution was, in fact, the greatest rescue in history. Here's what happened at the cross and why it changed everything.
What happened
Jesus was arrested, falsely tried, beaten, and nailed to a cross to die — one of the cruellest forms of execution ever devised. He suffered publicly and painfully, mocked by onlookers, abandoned by most of his followers. By every visible measure, it was a day of horror and defeat.
Bearing our sin
But beneath the horror, something profound was happening. Jesus was willingly bearing the punishment for human sin. 'He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities... and with his stripes we are healed.' He was dying in our place, so we could be forgiven.
'It is finished'
Among Jesus' final words was a cry of completion: 'It is finished.' It wasn't defeat but triumph — the debt of sin paid in full, the work of salvation accomplished. Nothing remained to be added by us. Those words are the reason we can have peace with God.
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
The crucifixion of Jesus is the heart of the gospel — the day he willingly bore our sin, dying in our place, and declared the work of salvation 'finished.' What looked like defeat was the greatest victory, opening the way home to God. The cross is where God's justice and love meet, and where our forgiveness was won. It changed everything — and it was for you.
