The Goodness of God: He Is Good All the Time

21 October 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

'God is good' is one of the most basic and important truths of the Christian faith. His goodness is not just something he does, but who he is. Here's what Scripture reveals about the goodness of God.

Goodness in his very nature

God isn't merely good on his best days; goodness is his unchanging character. Everything he is and does flows from perfect goodness. Jesus even said, 'there is none good but one, that is, God.' He is the source and standard of all that is truly good.

'Taste and see'

God's goodness isn't just to be believed but experienced. 'O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.' As we walk with him, we discover his goodness in real ways — his provision, his kindness, his faithful care.

O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
Psalm 34:8, KJV

Good even when life is hard

The hardest test of this truth is suffering. But God's goodness doesn't depend on our circumstances being easy; it rests on his unchanging character. Even in dark times, we can trust that God is good and is working good, though we may not see how. 'The LORD is good to all.'

Every good gift

All the good in our lives ultimately comes from God. 'Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.' Recognising this fills us with gratitude and helps us see his goodness scattered through even ordinary days.

The goodness of God is woven into his very nature — he is good all the time, not just in what he does but in who he is. His goodness can be tasted and experienced, trusted even when life is hard, and seen in every good gift we receive. When circumstances tempt you to doubt it, hold on to this: God is good, and he is good to you.
