The Gospel Explained Simply

25 March 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

'Gospel' means 'good news' — and it's the very heart of the Christian faith. But what exactly is this good news? Here's the gospel explained simply and clearly.

The problem: sin

The gospel starts with an honest diagnosis: we've all sinned and fallen short of God's standard, and this separates us from a holy God. We can't fix this ourselves — no amount of good behaviour bridges the gap our sin created. That's the bad news that makes the good news necessary.

The solution: Jesus

Here's the good news: God did for us what we couldn't do for ourselves. 'For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.' Jesus lived the perfect life we couldn't, died in our place to pay for our sin, and rose again, defeating death.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16, KJV

The response: faith

Salvation is received, not earned — 'by grace are ye saved through faith.' We simply turn from our sin and trust in Jesus and what he did. It's a gift to be received with empty hands, not a wage to be worked for. Anyone who comes to him in faith is welcomed and forgiven.

The gospel, explained simply, is this: we've all sinned and are separated from God; but God so loved us that he sent Jesus to die in our place and rise again; and all who turn to him in faith are forgiven and given eternal life. It's the best news in the world — that God has made a way home for us, freely offered by grace. And it's good news for you: whoever you are, you can come to him and be saved.
