The 'I Am' Sayings of Jesus and What They Mean

In the Gospel of John, Jesus made a series of profound statements that each begin with the words 'I am.' These seven 'I am' sayings are like windows onto his identity, each revealing a different facet of who he is and what he offers. Here's a guide to each one.
Why 'I am' matters
The phrase itself is significant. When Moses asked God's name at the burning bush, God answered, 'I AM.' By repeatedly saying 'I am,' Jesus was echoing that divine name — a claim his hearers didn't miss. Once he said plainly, 'Before Abraham was, I am,' and they picked up stones, understanding he was claiming to be God. Each 'I am' saying carries that weight.
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
The Bread of Life and the Light of the World
'I am the bread of life,' Jesus said — the one who satisfies our deepest spiritual hunger, so that whoever comes to him will never be truly empty. And 'I am the light of the world' — the one who dispels our darkness, so that those who follow him need not walk in confusion or despair, but have 'the light of life.' He meets our hunger and our darkness.
The Door and the Good Shepherd
'I am the door,' Jesus said — the way in to safety and salvation, the entrance to life with God. And 'I am the good shepherd' — the one who knows his sheep, leads and protects them, and lays down his life for them. Together they show a Saviour who is both the way in and the one who cares for us once we're his.
The Resurrection and the Way
'I am the resurrection, and the life,' he told grieving Martha — the one with power over death, the guarantee that those who trust him will live even though they die. And perhaps the most famous: 'I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.' He is not merely a guide to God; he is the way to God himself.
The True Vine
Finally, 'I am the true vine' — the source of all spiritual life and fruitfulness. As branches draw life from the vine, so we draw everything we need from staying connected to Jesus. Apart from him, he said, 'ye can do nothing.' The 'I am' sayings end where the Christian life is lived: abiding in him.
The seven 'I am' sayings of Jesus reveal him as our bread, our light, our door, our shepherd, our resurrection, our way, and our vine — everything we need for life with God. Each one is both a claim to deity and an invitation. Take them together, and they paint a portrait of a Saviour who meets our every deepest need. The right response is simply to come to the great 'I AM' and find life in him.
