The Importance of Christian Community

11 February 2025 · 1 min read · Understanding the Bible

In our individualistic age, faith is often treated as a purely private matter. But the Bible presents the Christian life as something meant to be lived in community. Here's why Christian community matters.

We're better together

The Bible celebrates the strength of companionship: 'Two are better than one... For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow.' We're not meant to walk alone. In community, we lift each other up, share burdens, and are stronger together than any of us is alone.

Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
Ecclesiastes 4:9–10, KJV

We grow together

We're shaped and sharpened by other believers — encouraged, taught, challenged, and held accountable. The Bible urges us to 'consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works.' Iron sharpens iron; we grow more like Christ in the company of his people than in isolation.

We endure together

Community helps us persevere. When our faith is weak, others hold us up; when we're discouraged, they encourage us; when we drift, they call us back. Many who've walked away from faith did so in isolation. Staying connected to God's people helps us endure to the end.

Christian community matters because faith was never meant to be lived alone. We're better together, we grow together, and we endure together. In community we find encouragement, accountability, and strength for the journey. However personal your faith, don't try to go it alone — for we are members of one another, and we need each other to become all God is calling us to be.
