An unlikely queen

Esther was a young Jewish woman, an orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai, living as an exile in the Persian empire. Through an unlikely series of events, she was chosen to become queen to King Xerxes — while keeping her Jewish identity secret. She had risen to the very top, though she couldn't yet know why.

A deadly plot

A powerful official named Haman, enraged by Mordecai's refusal to bow to him, hatched a genocidal plan: to destroy all the Jews throughout the empire, and he manipulated the king into approving it. God's people faced annihilation, and Esther — hidden in the palace — was uniquely positioned to do something about it, if she dared.

'For such a time as this'

Mordecai sent Esther an urgent message, urging her to appeal to the king. But approaching the king uninvited could mean death. His words to her became one of the most famous lines in the Bible: 'who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?' Perhaps, he suggested, her whole improbable rise had been preparing her for this single, dangerous moment.

Esther chose courage. She asked her people to fast and pray, then resolved to approach the king with words that ring with faith and resolve: 'if I perish, I perish.' She risked everything.
