The Story of Gideon: God Uses the Weak

2 May 2026 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

Gideon's story is one of the most encouraging in the Old Testament — the account of a fearful, unlikely man whom God turned into a deliverer, winning an impossible battle with a tiny army. It reveals how God delights to use the weak and get all the glory. Here's the story and its meaning.

An unlikely hero

When we first meet Gideon, Israel is oppressed by the Midianites, and Gideon is hiding, threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the enemy — hardly the picture of a warrior. Yet the angel of the LORD greeted him with startling words: 'The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.' God saw not what Gideon was, but what, with him, Gideon would become.

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.
Judges 6:12, KJV

A hesitant faith

Gideon was full of doubts and questions, even asking God for signs to be sure — the famous 'fleece' laid out overnight. God patiently reassured him again and again. It's oddly comforting: God worked with Gideon's weak and hesitant faith rather than demanding heroic certainty. He met Gideon in his doubts and led him forward step by step.

The army reduced

When Gideon gathered an army to face the Midianites, God did something surprising: he told Gideon his force was too large. Twice God reduced it — from thirty-two thousand down to just three hundred men — 'lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.' God deliberately removed every human advantage, so the victory could only be credited to him.

An impossible victory

With just three hundred men armed with trumpets, torches, and jars — no conventional weapons — Gideon routed the vast Midianite army in the night. The victory was so lopsided that no one could claim it was won by human strength. God had used a frightened man and a tiny band to defeat an overwhelming enemy, and all the glory went to him.

The story of Gideon is a powerful reminder that God uses the weak, the fearful, and the unlikely — and that he often strips away our advantages precisely so his power can shine. He called a hiding farmer a 'mighty man of valour,' worked with his hesitant faith, and won an impossible victory through him. Whatever weakness you feel, Gideon's story says God can use you, and that his strength is made perfect in weakness.
