The Wisdom of God: His Ways Are Higher

14 October 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

God is infinitely wise — knowing all things perfectly and always acting in the wisest possible way. His wisdom is a great comfort when life doesn't make sense. Here's what Scripture reveals about the wisdom of God.

Higher than our ways

God's wisdom far surpasses ours. 'For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways.' We see a tiny part; God sees the whole. His perspective is infinitely wider than ours.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Isaiah 55:8–9, KJV

Trusting what we can't understand

Because God's wisdom is so far above ours, there will be times we don't understand what he's doing. His wisdom invites us to trust even when we can't trace his reasoning. What looks confusing to us may be perfect wisdom from his vantage point.

Wisdom we can ask for

God's wisdom isn't locked away; he shares it generously. 'If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally.' When we need guidance, we can ask the all-wise God to lead us, confident that he will.

The wisdom of the cross

The supreme display of God's wisdom is the cross — which looked like foolishness to the world, yet was God's brilliant plan to save us. It reminds us that God's wisdom often works in ways that surprise and confound human expectation, and always accomplishes his good purpose.

The wisdom of God is infinitely higher than our own — his thoughts and ways far above ours, working perfectly even when we can't understand. It invites us to trust him in the confusing times, to ask him freely for guidance, and to marvel at a wisdom that turned even a cross into salvation. When life doesn't make sense, we can rest in the wisdom of a God who sees the whole.
