What Are the Ten Commandments? (God's Timeless Guidelines)

3 October 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

The Ten Commandments are among the most famous and influential laws in human history, given by God to Israel through Moses. But many people couldn't name them or explain what they mean. Here's a clear overview of what they are and why they still matter.

What they are

The Ten Commandments are ten foundational directives God gave His people, recorded in Exodus 20. They fall into two groups: the first four concern our relationship with God, and the last six concern our relationships with other people. Together they summarise how to live rightly before God and others.

Loving God (commandments 1–4)

The first four call us to: have no other gods before Him, make no idols, not misuse His name, and keep the Sabbath holy. At their heart, these say: put God first, worship Him alone, honour Him, and rest in Him. They protect our relationship with God as the foundation of everything.

Loving others (commandments 5–10)

The last six call us to: honour our parents, not murder, not commit adultery, not steal, not lie, and not covet. These protect human life, family, property, truth, and contentment. They're the basis of a just and loving society — how to treat others rightly.

Jesus summed them up

Jesus summarised the whole law in two commands: love God with all your heart, and love your neighbour as yourself. The Ten Commandments are really an expansion of these two — love for God and love for people. That's their beating heart.

Why they still matter

While Christians aren't saved by keeping the commandments (we're saved by grace), they still reveal God's character and His good design for human life. They show us how to live well, expose our need for grace when we fall short, and guide us toward loving God and others. Their wisdom is timeless.

The Ten Commandments are God's timeless guidelines for loving Him and loving others — the foundation of a life that honours God and blesses people. They reveal His character, show us our need for grace, and still guide how to live well today. Far from outdated rules, they're a gift pointing toward a good and flourishing life.
