What Does It Mean to Be a Godly Woman? (Beyond the Stereotypes)

11 July 2026 · 1 min read · Understanding the Bible

Say 'godly woman' and a hundred images spring to mind — some helpful, many not. Over the years the phrase has picked up cultural baggage that Scripture never gave it. So it's worth stripping it back and asking what the Bible actually means.

Not a personality type

A godly woman isn't a particular temperament — quiet, domestic, endlessly agreeable. Scripture's women are wildly different: Deborah led a nation, Ruth was fiercely loyal, Mary pondered deeply, Priscilla taught. Godliness isn't a mould that flattens personality; it's a depth that runs beneath all of them.

A woman who fears the Lord

If the Bible had to define it in a phrase, it would be this: a woman who reveres God. The famous Proverbs 31 passage ends not with a to-do list but with the heart behind it — a woman who fears the Lord is the one to be praised. Everything else flows from that centre.

Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
Proverbs 31:30, KJV

Freeing, not confining

Understood rightly, godliness frees a woman rather than boxing her in. It means her worth is settled by God, not by appearance, achievement, or approval. It means she can be strong and gentle, ambitious and surrendered, without contradiction — because her identity rests in Christ, not in living up to anyone's checklist.

Grown, not performed

Godliness isn't performed for an audience; it's grown quietly, over years, through walking with God. It shows up in small faithfulnesses — how she speaks, forgives, loves, and trusts — far more than in any public display.

So don't chase a stereotype. Chase God. A godly woman is simply a woman whose life is increasingly shaped by Him — and that looks as varied and beautiful as women themselves.
