What Does the Bible Say About Generosity?

12 June 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

Generosity runs throughout the Bible, reflecting the very heart of a God who loves to give. In a world that pushes us to accumulate, biblical generosity is refreshingly countercultural. Here's what Scripture teaches about generosity.

God loves a cheerful giver

The Bible cares not just that we give, but how: 'Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.' Generosity is meant to be joyful, springing from a willing heart rather than obligation.

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:7, KJV

Giving enriches the giver

Jesus taught a beautiful paradox: 'Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over.' Generosity, far from leaving us poorer, opens our hands and hearts and brings a blessing that holding on never can.

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
Luke 6:38, KJV

The generous are blessed

Scripture links generosity with flourishing: 'The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.' Those who give freely often find themselves the richer for it — not necessarily in money, but in joy, relationships, and the blessing of God.

The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
Proverbs 11:25, KJV

More than money

Generosity reaches beyond money to our time, attention, hospitality, and care. A generous life is marked by open hands and an open heart in every area — always looking for ways to bless others, as God has so generously blessed us.

The Bible teaches that God loves a cheerful giver, that generosity enriches rather than impoverishes the giver, that the generous are blessed, and that generosity extends to our whole lives, not just our money. Flowing from the heart of a giving God, generosity loosens the grip of greed and brings real joy. Give freely and cheerfully, and discover the blessing Scripture promises to the open-handed.
