What Does the Bible Say About Honesty?

Honesty is close to God's heart, because God himself is a God of truth. Scripture consistently calls his people to truthfulness and integrity. Here's what the Bible says about honesty.
God loves truth, hates lies
The Bible is blunt about how God views dishonesty: 'Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.' God hates falsehood and delights in truthfulness. Our honesty (or lack of it) matters deeply to him.
Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.
Put away lying
As God's people, we're called to leave dishonesty behind: 'Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour.' Truthfulness isn't optional for the Christian; it's part of the new life we're called to live.
Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
Honesty in everything
Biblical honesty goes beyond not telling outright lies. It includes integrity in our dealings, keeping our word, being truthful even when it costs us, and not deceiving through half-truths or misleading impressions. God calls us to be people of our word, honest in the small things as well as the large.
Integrity builds trust
Honesty is also deeply practical. It builds trust and a clear conscience, while dishonesty erodes relationships and burdens the soul. A reputation for integrity is precious, and it reflects the God of truth we serve. Living honestly, even when it's hard, is always worth it.
The Bible teaches that God loves truth and hates lies, and calls his people to put away dishonesty and speak truth in everything — with integrity, keeping our word, even when it costs us. Honesty reflects the God of truth, builds trust, and frees the conscience. In a world of spin and half-truths, choose to be a person of integrity, truthful in all things, and delight the God who delights in those who deal truly.
