What Does the Bible Say About Work?

16 December 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

Many people see work as a necessary evil — something to endure until the weekend or retirement. But the Bible presents a far more meaningful and dignified view of work. Here's what Scripture teaches about work, purpose, and doing our jobs for God.

Work is part of God's good design

Work isn't a result of the fall or a punishment; it was part of God's good creation from the beginning. God worked in creating the world, and he gave humanity meaningful work to do in the garden before sin ever entered. Work is woven into what it means to be made in God's image. It has inherent dignity and purpose — it's part of how we reflect our working God.

Work as unto the Lord

The Bible transforms our jobs with one profound idea: whatever we do, we're ultimately working for God. 'And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.' This dignifies even the most ordinary work. Whether you're cleaning, coding, caring, or leading, doing it heartily as service to God gives it eternal meaning and worth.

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
Colossians 3:23, KJV

Diligence and integrity

Scripture consistently commends hard work and warns against laziness. 'If any would not work, neither should he eat,' Paul wrote bluntly. The Bible calls us to diligence, honesty, and excellence in our labour — working faithfully whether or not anyone is watching, because we're working for God. Our work is a testimony to the integrity of our faith.

Work and rest in rhythm

While the Bible honours work, it also insists on rest. God built a rhythm of work and Sabbath rest into creation, and it's a wise pattern for us. Work is good, but it isn't meant to consume us or become our identity and god. Regular rest reminds us that our worth isn't measured by our productivity, and that God, not our work, sustains us.

Work with eternal purpose

Ultimately, our work can serve God's purposes — providing for our families, contributing to society, serving others, and being a witness in our workplace. When we see our jobs not just as a way to earn money but as a place to serve God and people, even ordinary work takes on eternal significance. Your workplace is a mission field, and your work an offering.

The Bible presents work not as a necessary evil but as part of God's good design, dignified and meaningful when done 'as to the Lord.' It calls us to diligence and integrity, balanced with rest, and infused with eternal purpose. However ordinary your job, you can do it heartily for God, with excellence and honesty, as a place to serve him and others. Work, rightly seen, becomes worship.
