Who Was Deborah? A Woman Who Led With Courage

21 August 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

Deborah stands out as one of the most remarkable leaders in the Old Testament — a prophet and judge who led Israel with wisdom and courage in a time of crisis. Here's who Deborah was.

A leader in a hard time

Deborah lived during the turbulent era of the judges, when Israel repeatedly fell into trouble. She was 'a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time' — settling disputes and speaking God's word to the people. In a difficult age, she was a trusted, God-appointed leader.

And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time.
Judges 4:4, KJV

Wisdom and authority

People came to Deborah for judgment, recognising her wisdom and her connection to God. She held real authority and used it well, guiding the nation according to God's will. Her leadership was marked by discernment, faith, and courage.

Courage in battle

When Israel was oppressed by a powerful enemy, Deborah called the commander Barak to lead an army against them, delivering God's promise of victory. Barak insisted she come with him, and she did — fearlessly going into a dangerous situation, confident in God. Through her leadership, God gave Israel a great deliverance.

A song of praise

After the victory, Deborah sang a triumphant song of praise to God, giving him the glory for the deliverance. Her song, recorded in Scripture, celebrates God's power and the willingness of those who served. She was quick to credit God rather than herself.

Deborah was a prophet, judge, and courageous leader who guided Israel with wisdom and delivered them from oppression, giving God the glory. In a difficult age, she stands as one of the Bible's great examples of faith-filled leadership. Her story reminds us that God raises up whom he will, and that courage rooted in trust in God can change the course of a nation.
