Who Was Joshua? The Leader Who Trusted God

12 August 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible · For Children

Joshua was one of the great leaders of the Old Testament — the man who succeeded Moses and led Israel into the promised land. His story is full of courage, faith, and the assurance of God's presence. Here's who Joshua was.

A faithful assistant

Long before he led, Joshua served. As Moses' assistant, he was faithful in the background for many years. He was also one of only two spies who trusted God to give Israel the land when the other ten were afraid. His long faithfulness and his bold faith prepared him for leadership.

'Be strong and of a good courage'

When Moses died and the enormous task of leading the nation fell to Joshua, God met his fear with a repeated command and promise: 'Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid... for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.' Joshua's courage rested not on his own ability but on God's presence.

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Joshua 1:9, KJV

Trusting God for victory

Joshua led Israel to trust God for one impossible victory after another — most famously at Jericho, whose walls fell not by military might but by obedience to God's unusual instructions. Again and again, Joshua showed that faith and obedience, not human strength, were the keys to success.

'As for me and my house'

At the end of his life, Joshua challenged the people to choose whom they would serve, declaring his own commitment: 'as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.' He finished as he had lived — wholeheartedly devoted to God, and calling others to the same.

Joshua was the courageous leader who trusted God to bring Israel into the promised land — faithful in the background, bold in believing God, and strong because God was with him. His life models a courage rooted not in self-confidence but in God's presence, and a lifelong devotion captured in his famous declaration: 'as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.'
