Lydia holds a special place in Christian history as the first recorded convert to Christianity in Europe. Her brief story is a beautiful picture of an open heart and a generous life. Here's who Lydia was.
A woman of business
Lydia was a seller of purple cloth — a valuable, luxury item — which suggests she was a successful businesswoman. She was also a worshipper of God, seeking him even before she'd heard the full gospel. She was gathered with other women for prayer by a river when Paul arrived.
God opened her heart
As Paul shared the gospel, something wonderful happened: 'whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.' Lydia believed, and she and her household were baptised. The phrase is precious — it was God who opened her heart to respond. Conversion is always his gracious work.
And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.
An open home
Immediately, Lydia's new faith showed itself in generous hospitality. She insisted Paul and his companions stay at her home, and her house became a base for the gospel and likely the first meeting place of the church in Philippi. Her open heart led straight to an open home.
A pillar of the church
Lydia became a foundational member of the Philippian church — one of Paul's most beloved congregations. Her faith, hospitality, and support helped establish Christianity in a new continent. From one open heart by a riverside, the gospel took root in Europe.
Lydia was a successful businesswoman whose heart God opened to the gospel, making her the first recorded Christian convert in Europe. Her immediate response — generous hospitality and an open home — helped launch a whole church. Her story is a beautiful reminder that conversion is God's work in opening hearts, and that a heart truly opened to God quickly opens its home and life to others.
