Who Was Samuel? The Prophet Who Heard God's Voice

23 August 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible

Samuel was one of the most important figures in Israel's history — a prophet, priest, and leader who bridged the era of the judges and the age of the kings. His story begins with a boy learning to hear God's voice. Here's who Samuel was.

A child given to God

Samuel's mother, Hannah, had prayed desperately for a child and promised to give him to God's service. When Samuel was born, she kept her vow, bringing him as a young boy to serve at the tabernacle. His life was dedicated to God from the very start, the fruit of a mother's prayer.

'Speak; for thy servant heareth'

As a boy, Samuel heard God calling his name in the night. Guided by the priest Eli, he learned to respond, 'Speak; for thy servant heareth.' It's a beautiful model of a listening heart, ready to hear and obey God. From then on, God spoke through Samuel, and the whole nation recognised him as a true prophet.

And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
1 Samuel 3:10, KJV

A faithful leader

Samuel led Israel with integrity for many years, calling the people back to God and judging with fairness. When it came time for Israel to have kings, it was Samuel who anointed both Saul and David. He served as the trusted voice of God during a pivotal transition in the nation's history.

A man of prayer and integrity

Samuel was known for his prayerfulness and his blameless character. At the end of his life, he could challenge the people to name any wrong he'd done, and they could find none. He even considered failing to pray for others a sin against God. His life models faithfulness, integrity, and a heart attentive to God.

Samuel was the prophet who learned as a boy to say, 'Speak; for thy servant heareth,' and served God faithfully for a lifetime — leading Israel with integrity, anointing its first kings, and modelling a listening, prayerful heart. His story, born from a mother's prayer, encourages us to cultivate the same readiness to hear and obey God. A listening heart is the beginning of a faithful life.
