Who Was Timothy? Paul's Young Companion
28 August 2025 · 2 min read · Understanding the Bible
Timothy was one of the apostle Paul's closest companions and dearest friends — a young man Paul mentored, loved like a son, and entrusted with leading a church. His story is full of encouragement, especially for younger or more hesitant believers. Here's who Timothy was.
A faith passed down
Timothy came from a mixed background — a Greek father and a Jewish mother and grandmother of sincere faith. Paul noted that genuine faith 'dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice.' Timothy's faith was nurtured at home, a beautiful picture of faith passed down through generations.
Young and timid
Timothy seems to have been young, and somewhat timid and prone to discouragement. Paul had to encourage him repeatedly to be bold and not let anyone look down on his youth: 'Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers.' God used him not despite his youth and timidity, but through them.
Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
A faithful servant
Despite his timidity, Timothy served faithfully, travelling with Paul, carrying out difficult assignments, and eventually pastoring the church in Ephesus. Paul trusted him deeply, calling him 'my own son in the faith' and praising his genuine care for others. Faithfulness, not natural boldness, made him useful.
Mentored and mentoring
Timothy's relationship with Paul is a beautiful model of mentoring. Paul poured himself into Timothy, and urged Timothy in turn to entrust what he'd learned to others — passing the faith on down the line. It's a picture of how faith and ministry are handed from one generation to the next.
Timothy was Paul's young companion — a believer with a faith nurtured at home, who overcame timidity to serve faithfully and lead a church. His story encourages every young or hesitant believer that God can use them fully, and it models the beauty of mentoring and passing on the faith. You don't need to be bold by nature to be an example of the believers; you need to be faithful.
