A table in the presence

By Niall Florence · 5 August 2026 · 1 min read

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Psalm 23:5, KJV

The shepherd psalm saves one of its boldest images for late: thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. Not after their departure — in their presence.

God's goodness does not require ideal conditions. He sets the table amid the very circumstances you wish were gone: the diagnosis, the conflict, the uncertainty. The feast and the trouble share a room, and the feast is his.

Look for the prepared table today. An anointed head and a running-over cup are possible in the middle of things, not just after them.
