A very present help

2 July 2026 · 1 min read

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:1, KJV

Every word in this line is doing work, but the quiet one is “present.” Not a help that will arrive once the paperwork clears. Not a help reserved for the deserving, or for emergencies larger than yours. Present — here, now, in the room.

Refuge and strength are different gifts, and the day usually needs both. Refuge is where you go when you cannot hold; strength is what you are given when you must. The psalm does not make you choose, because God does not.

“In trouble” is the address where this help is found — which means trouble, whatever else it is, has become a meeting place. You do not have to get out of the trouble to reach Him. He is a very present help in it.
