Enough for today

3 July 2026 · 1 min read

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
Matthew 6:34, KJV

Worry is almost never about today. Today, mostly, is survivable — there is breakfast in it, and work you know how to do. Worry lives in tomorrow: the appointment, the invoice, the conversation that has not happened yet. Jesus knows exactly where it lives, and He draws a fence.

“Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof” is bracingly honest — no pretending the day holds no trouble. It holds exactly enough. And the unspoken half of the promise: the grace measured out for today fits today’s trouble. Tomorrow’s grace has not been issued yet, which is why borrowing tomorrow’s trouble always leaves you short.

You will visit tomorrow several times before lunch. Each time, come back. This day is the assignment; it is also the gift. Live inside the fence.
